When can a deacon in the Catholic Church can wear a cassock and surplice?

  • Choir Dress:

When a deacon is not actively participating in the liturgical actions of the Mass (e.g., not reading the Gospel or assisting with the distribution of Communion), they may wear a cassock and surplice as choir dress. This is similar to how priests might wear choir dress (cassock and surplice) at a Mass they are attending but not celebrating.

  • Master of Ceremonies:

A deacon serving as the Master of Ceremonies during a Mass may wear a cassock and surplice as part of their vesture.

  • Other Liturgical Functions:

Deacons may choose to wear a cassock and surplice when assisting at other liturgical functions where a dalmatic is not required or appropriate.

  • Optional Attire:

For some occasions like weddings without a mass, baptisms, or graveside services, a cassock and surplice can be an optional form of attire for a deacon.  At those functions a deacon stole should be worn over the cassock and surplice.  It should be noted that presently deacons officiating at weddings without a mass are preferred to wear a white dalmatic.

  • Clerical Attire:

Deacons can wear a cassock and surplice as a form of clerical attire for non-liturgical events where it is deemed appropriate. This could include public appearances or ministry work where the deacon wishes to be visibly identified as a cleric. Please check with your pastor or diocese diaconate office for guidance and approval.

  • Distinction from Priest's Vestments:

While a deacon's dalmatic can resemble a priest's chasuble, the dalmatic is the distinctive vestment for a deacon at Mass.

  • Local Customs:

The specific occasions when a cassock and surplice are worn by deacons may vary based on local customs and diocesan guidelines.  Please check with your pastor or diocese diaconate office for guidance.
