Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Do not use an ironing board — do not use steam. Use a tabletop with a hard surface.
  2. Set the iron to the cotton/linen setting. Allow time for the iron to get fully hot.
  3. Place a terry cloth towel on the table or countertop. Place the garment on the towel.
  4. On mesh jerseys: use the included Teflon ironing sheet to keep the apliqué from adhering to the mesh.
  5. Position the patch on the garment where you want it.
  6. Cover the patch with a pressing cloth or the included Teflon ironing sheet.
  7. Once the iron is hot, place it on the pressing cloth directly over the patch using very firm pressure. Do not move the iron.
  8. Hold pressure for 30–35 seconds (40–45 seconds for heavy fabrics).
  9. Pick the iron up and repeat for any unheated areas.
  10. Allow the patch and garment to cool. Turn the garment inside out and repeat the process from the back.

Important: Do not iron patches onto garments that cannot accept the highest heat setting — for example: leather, silk, or nylon.

1. Why not use an ironing board?

An ironing board has a soft surface, and you must use a dense, hard surface. The heat from your iron will dissipate into the soft surface of the ironing board. The goal is to melt the adhesive on the back of the apliqué into the fabric — a hard surface ensures all that heat goes where it needs to go.

2. What is a Teflon ironing sheet?

A Teflon ironing sheet is a durable, man-made product that transfers high heat while preventing scorching of your garment and apliqué. As a bonus, it doubles as a craft sheet — most adhesives will not stick to it. Be sure to position the Teflon sheet carefully so the iron does not scorch any uncovered fabric.

3. Can the patches be ironed onto any garment?

The garment must be able to accept the highest heat setting on your iron. Do not apply patches to leather, silk, nylon, or other heat-sensitive fabrics. If you are unsure whether your garment can take the heat, we recommend choosing a different garment or sewing the patch on instead.

4. What about washing the garment after applying a patch?

If you are working with new denim or a similar garment, we recommend washing it first. After the patch has been applied, wash on a gentle cycle, then damp dry and hang to finish drying. Treat the garment as you would any nice item that needs gentle laundering.

Note: We cannot guarantee the patch will not loosen or detach after repeated laundering. Please use a gentle cycle and low-to-medium dryer heat. Occasionally, a few stitches may be needed to secure a loosened edge after many washings.
